4 ways to keep your home fresh for the monsoons

Monsoons might provide relief from the sweltering summer, but it can dampen your home decor and bedroom. Here are a few tips to help your home moisture-free during the rains.

1. Seal-off your home from the rains

Before you leave home for the office, remember to keep all your windows completely shut during the day. If you see water trickling through the window, make sure you seal the leaks off with an adhesive. If the windows are not completely sealed, sprays of moisture may enter your home and make your room damp. Your double bed sheets and pillows may absorb this moisture and leave a musty odour.

There might be tiny invisible cracks all over your home that suddenly become visible during a heavy shower or two. Check your walls, ceilings for any fissures and patch them up before the monsoons. How do you know if there's a leakage in the external pipes? You might see some damp bloated swelling on your painted walls.

2. Unclog your drains

With rainwater entering drains, there are increased chances of debris and dirt clogging the drains. You need to periodically check your drainage system and unclog and clean it if necessary. This keeps the odour away, as well as it prevents insects from breeding. Spray bleaching agents or use chemical drain cleaners to keep your drain clean and safe.

3. Use disinfectants

Every time it rains heavily, cockroaches, earthworms, snails, bugs and lizards start seeking refuge in your home. Keep them away with disinfectants. Ensure that you have cleaned all the corners and gotten rid of nest or cobwebs.

4. Take care of your home linen

After machine washing your double bed sheets and linen, there might still be extra moisture in them. Before you stow away these clean sheets, make sure to iron lightly so the last bit of moisture gets evaporated. Instead of machine wash, you can choose to dry clean the sheets. The process will make the bed sheets crisp and dry, similar to the ones you get in hotels. In the storage area, you can use silica gel packets that you find in new handbags and purses, to keep the linen dry and fungus-free. Place them in random places between the folds of the sheets.
